RETIRED PERSON VISA

Retired Person Visa

What is a Retired Person’s Visa?

Not only is South Africa an extremely popular tourist destination, it is also home to many retirees from across the globe. Many of these retirees reside here on Retired Person’s Visas. The key component to this visa is that applicants must have available an amount of no less than R37,000.00 per month. This prescribed amount may emanate from a variety of sources including, but not limited to, a combination of assets realising an amount of no less than R37,000.00 per month to the applicant, income from pensions or retirement funds, profit shares and other similar dividends, rental income from properties owned by the applicant, and interest earnings from investments held by the applicant.

It is also worth noting that family members may accompany the holder of a Retired Person’s Visa for the duration of their stay in the Republic and that this visa type may be issued for a period of up to four years at a time. It may be renewed from within South Africa on the condition that the financial requirements continue to be met.

Why a Retired Person’s Visa?

  • There is no prescribed age limit applicable to a Retired Person’s Visa which means that applicants of all ages, on the condition that they meet the financial requirements, may apply for a Retired Person’s Visa.
  • Applicants may apply for work and business endorsement on their Retired Person’s Visas which will allow them to own and operate their own business in the Republic.

What are the main documents needed?

  • Documentary evidence that the applicant has available to themselves an amount of no less than R37,000.00 per month, for the next 48 months.
  • Police Clearance Certificates from every country, including their country of origin, where the applicant has resided for a period of more than 12 months since their 18th birthday.

halloSA's hot tip

Retired Person’s Visas are a fantastic choice for the financially independent and this visa has the specific advantage that holders may apply for work and/or own business authorisation which will allow them, at the discretion of the Department of Home Affairs, to generate an income while residing in South Africa.
