RELATIVE'S VISA

Relative's Visa

What is a Relative’s Visa?

A Relative’s Visa is available to the immediate family members of a South African citizen or permanent resident. The current immigration landscape has seen two distinct usages being applied to this visa category. In the first instance, foreign spouses of South African citizens and permanent residents apply for Relative’s Visas in order to sojourn in the Republic with their spouses. However, please see our Spousal Visa page for more information on an alternative option for foreign spouses of South African citizens or permanent residents.

This visa category also allows for the issue of Temporary Residence Visas to first step of kinship relatives of South African citizens and permanent residents. It is important to note that holders of Relative’s Visas are explicitly prohibited from conducting any type of study, work or business activity within the Republic and that the South African relative must provide documentary evidence that they are able to support their foreign relative for the duration of their sojourn in South Africa.

Relative’s Visas are issued for a maximum period of up to two years at a time and may be renewed from within South Africa.

Why a Relative’s Visa?

  • Relative’s Visas allow for multiple entries into South Africa which means that holders of this visa can travel in and out of South Africa as frequently as needed.
  • Relative’s Visas allow for first step of kinship relatives to accompany their South African spouses or relatives for the duration of their stay in South Africa.

What are the main documents needed?

  • Proof, in the form of three months’ bank statements, that the South African spouse or relative has sufficient financial means to sustain the applicant for the duration of their sojourn in South Africa. A minimum amount of R8,500.00 per month must be available to the South African endorsing the application. This is an important document requirement due to the prohibition on work and business activities that are imposed by a Relative’s Visa.
  • Documentary evidence to prove, to the satisfaction of the Department of Home Affairs, the spousal relationship or kinship to the South African citizen or permanent resident.

halloSA's hot tip

Relative’s Visas serve an important purpose for foreign spouses and foreign relatives of South Africans alike, but the financial burden often proves to be a fatal blow to applicants wishing to apply under this category.
